October 2009
Walk review from Peter Chilton 11th October 2009 Carn Ghluasaid (957m) Kintail
Eleventh October through the breaking dawn
We headed for Dornie to greet the morn.
Seven were early, one late! You ask who?
Fourth letter of the alphabet is the clue!
Eight members left Dornie at eight fifteen,
I’ll say no more but you know what I mean.
Arriving at Lundie going up to nine
Would have been better had the weather been fine.
Six of us then all decided to walk
Two declined after having a talk
The weather for one did cast some doubt,
The other was invalided out.....
We headed west along the old road
Then on the stalker's path to the north we strode.
The sky was grey and the clouds were near
But patches of blue sky began to appear.
The path turned wetter over boggy ground
Long legs can be such a help we found.
Recent rain had made its mark it seems
At times we zigzagged up mountain streams.
Persistent drizzle gave way to showers
Blue sky showed promise for the next few hours.
Wet outer layers were dried with ease
As we walked into a stiffening breeze.
A snack we had around three thousand feet
When some of us a banana did eat.
Then we crossed the stony plateau with a hop
And gathered round the cairn near the north face top.
Photos were taken then we sheltered and ate,
We "soaked up" the views, the rainbows were great.
The breeze now increasing, flying tea bags a sight,
And my foam seat had a go at being a kite.
Decision time now to do one, two or three.
Weather unlikely to hold, we could see.
So to retrace our steps was the obvious way,
Safety being paramount there's no more to say.
The descent revealed rainbows at all of the bends,
Low slung ones at that, you could see both the ends.
If the pictures are true, then with what we are told
Some members must surely have that pot of gold.
The wildlife was hiding, not much did we find,
A lonely red deer stag was looking for a hind.
We saw not a raven, just a solitary frog,
And then back near the bottom a bearded collie dog.
An enjoyable day if length it did lack,
Some members hinted that they would be back
On a sunny fine day to do one, two or three,
That sounds like a good idea to me.
