Walk review from Peter Chilton 15th November 2009 Ben Aslak (610m) Kylerhea

Sheltered by rocks only twelve fifteen,

Looking back to see where we have been.

Sandwiches, meat pies are just the best

And now is the time to have a rest.

A short stroll now to Ben Aslak first top,

The stiff breeze too cool to prolong the stop.

Lochan passed, final summit attain,

Five sisters of Kintail we see again.

Retrace to the lochan no rain we hope,

Descend to the north down steep grass slope,

Pathless again now this leg is the last,

the road soon reached by the Kylerhea mast.

Two eagles above the sound we saw

As we paused a while and watched in awe,

Brace of red grouse fly in front of me

 Hairy caterpillar others see!

Walk back on the road a short two mile,

Tarry by "graffiti stone" just a while.

Think of the drovers here in times past

then leg it back to the cars, at last!

Rose with her new stick the walk did make,

Ruth changed her jacket, for goodness sake!

Dee with her new hat she could not hide

At least Mark took it all in his stride.

The weather was kind, one shower of rain,

Stiff breeze on each top that we did gain.

A good nine miles, four tops on the way,

Home in daylight, thanks to all for the day.

Sunday morning all were in walk mode,

Six members met on the Kylerhea road.

Are things changing? I wonder why

Only two from Kyle, the rest from Skye!

Boots we put on for walking on rocks,

Come on Hamish, have you lost your socks?

Three cars drove to the start of the walk,

Eight thirty now there's no time to talk.

Two miles we walk up the forest track

Then look at the flank of Ben Aslak.

To walk due east that would be no test

So we all agree to head south south west.

To Beinn Dubh a' Bhealaich off we hike

Following the tracks of an old quad bike.

Red deer watching us from the knoll

The steepness now starts to take its toll.

The cairn on the top gives us the view

Isle Ornsay, Mallaig and Eigg we knew.

One kilometre to the next top

A trig point to see, so off we hop.

It's breezy on top, no shelter here

"We'll head for those rocks, they are quite near".

Some had a snack and I smiled when,

Bananas were drawn at half past ten.

We head north north east down a pathless slope

Then cross a bog, not too wet I hope?

On up the steepest climb of the day

"What time's dinner?" I hear some say.
