Walk review from Dee Taylor 16th August 2009 Coulags to Achnashellach
Due to adverse weather reports our Route Adviser called off the climb into Bruach Na Frithe and the walk to the Fairy Pools. This walk will be rescheduled when possible this year to give members a taste of the Cuillin.
Instead, members were invited to arrive at the pick up point in Kyle at 7.45am where a more sheltered low-level local walk would be decided on. 4 club members and 1 visiting friend set off on a very damp and cloudy morning for a 2 car share to Coulags - Strathcarron to walk to Achnashellach where car 2 was deposited. At Coulags the path signposted for Torridon, follows the Fionn - abhainn which was in spate, causing detours to safe crossing points on a number of occasions. Once over the footbridge and past the exploration of the bothy, a cairn is found marking the path left to the accent of Maol Chean-dearg or right to continue our chosen route. We then continued on to Loch Coire Fionnaraich where once again high waters over the path meant more detours on to higher boggy ground. Here we were greeted by a most beautiful rainbow, which we walked into. On arriving at the Bealach na Lice, we took the left fork for a very short detour to view Beinn Damp. Continuing on this path would take you to Torridon. Doubling back, we continued right and made our way through Coir Lair climbing to over 2000ft shadowed by the long ridge of Beinn Liath Mhor and the jagged ridge of Sgorr Ruadh. Here we enjoyed watching a family of deer accompanied by their young. Although light rain showers followed us all day, the cloud gave way to blue sky long enough for us to enjoy clear views of the mountains and beyond. The path eventually comes to another cross roads, right fork to access Fuar Tholl, left to the Coulin Pass or our route straight on to Achnashellach Station following the River Lair with its impressive waterfall which we enjoyed visiting. Also the berry picking on the last stretch was a bonus. Conditions of the day were showery, clammy warm, very midge-prone (tea stops were over quick) and very very wet underfoot but we all enjoyed it thoroughly as it was a new walk to us all. 17Km, 8 hours.
