What a great start to our third year, 14 members and one guest met at Shiel Bridge Camp Site car park at 9.30am on a lovely bright morning to enjoy our first walk out. The path up the Glen starts from behind the campsite and climbs gently by the Allt Undalain to cross a sturdy wooden bridge after which the Glen opens up with views of Biod an Fhithich on the left and the waterfalls of Allt a Choire Chaoil and Allt A Choire Uaine flowing down to join Allt Undalain. After about 3klm,the path now climbs steeply to the right at a junction with the path to the Saddle Horseshoe, and after tackling this, a welcome cuppa was enjoyed at a peaceful waterfall before the final short pull to the lovely ice covered Loch Coire (4.5klm)
We continued on the path above the loch around to the next cairn with its beautiful views, picking out Ben Aslak, Kyle Rhea, Beinn Sgritheall and beyond to the hills of Knoydart basking sunny blue skies. Here the party split into two groups, 5 taking the path downwards to Moyle where they enjoyed lunch in the shelter of a shieling before returning to the Loch Coire to meet the 10 who decided to climb Sgurr Mhic Bharraich (779m). Unfortunately the hill was shrouded in thick cloud and a crisp covering of fresh snow so good navigation skills were needed to locate the summit cairn. Although no real view, lunch was enjoyed here and also a sighting of Ptarmigan before descending back to the Loch. An eagle was seen on the descent. Returning by our inward route, the inevitable happened, the skies cleared, the cloud lifted off the summits and the Five Sisters appeared in front of us, a nice walk out: a round trip of about 6 hours. Refreshments and socialising were much enjoyed in The Kintail Lodge Hotel on the way home.
