Report Feb 2010

Walk review from Peter Chilton 21st Feb 2010 Ben Tianavaig (413m) – Braes, Isle of Skye.

Five members at 8.15 left Kyle, Met 2 in Broadford and waited a while.
All piled into an eight seater you see, And off we set on the road to Portree.

With fresh snow cover and ice overnight, Tianavaig looked an inviting sight,
9.30 and we were all booted up, "Just look at the horns on that there tup!"

We'd walked for 40 minutes no more, When an Eagle showed how it could soar.
Then 3 more joined it as we watched in awe, A raven, though dwarfed, was declaring war!

With the icy wind blowing at our back, Sun high in the sky nothing did we lack,
The snow a bit deeper now, keep warm we try, 2 more Golden Eagles take to the sky.

Photo. time on top, "Where's Faye?" we ask. "Behind the trig. point with her coffee flask!"
Here heading north descend snow covered slope, Of Sea Eagle spotting we live in hope.

Snack time in the rocks some shelter find, Away from the wind and the sun is kind.
Footprints aplenty, no rabbits in sight, On the way back the reason came to light.

Atmospheric area, rocks to explore, Decided against visiting the shore.
Climb back to the top in sunshine once more, Not knowing the treat we had in store.

Two Eagles we saw, not trying to hide, We viewed from above and watched them glide.
No wing beats, just shadows there as they soar, Wonder where the rabbits are, no more!

With "radio silence" well maintained, The raptors undisturbed remained.
This best view yet, will be hard to beat, And for one member was a Birthday treat.

Afternoon tea overlooking the bay, Reflect on the sights we've seen today.
In wall-to-wall sunshine we drove for a spell, Then I left 'em all at the Broadford Hotel.

I know not who chose this walk we have done, But for views and wildlife it's second to none.
The walk next month has something to beat, Thank You for this one it was a real treat.

  Peter Chilton.
