9 members set off in a two-car share to Orbost in Dunvegan on a bright sunny morning.
On arrival, 7 decided on the main walk taking in the two Macleod's Tables and 2 opting for
the lower level of the Macleod's Maidens.
Parking at Orbost farm, we took the sign posted track that skirts loch Bracadale. Once through the wooded area, a short detour and climb rewards you with perfect views of the natural arches. Here we were entertained by two sea eagles vying with a raven before rejoining the path onwards to the maidens. The weather and visibility being excellent, the Maidens were a delight. We chose to return across country, lunch was enjoyed from Steineval (188m) a great view point, before continuing on to Ben Idrigill, Beinn na Baineid (371) and eventually rejoining the path at the woods and back to Orbost: a very enjoyable and highly recommended 10-mile plus walk.
Walk review from Peter Chilton 18th April 2010 MacLeod’s Tables
Seven struck out from the road to Orbost, On a compass bearing, we'd not get lost.
Healabhal Mhor, North Table, to some, Our first objective, high ground to be won.
We crossed the moor, the burn, then the river. The steep grass slope did make some shiver,
But the top was reached, two got there first, The others caught up with a final burst.
Regrouped we gazed at a house so blue! Then headed south towards "Table Two".
We traversed a grass covered rock outcrop, And lunched on the slope beneath the second top.
Ten minutes push we're atop "Table Two", Healabhal Bheag with an outer isle view.
Descend and meet friendly Rottweiler dog, Owner said, too late, "It's been in the Bog!"
We tramp north east coming off the hill, Direction easy, It's the end "Wind Mill".
Back to the start around 6 hours time, "Cuppa time", said Rose, "Y'all come back to mine".
The wind at our backs for most of the day, Two eagles we saw, but so far away.
The views from the tops might make some think why, We don't do more walks on this Island of Skye.
